NEW awards have been launched to find Jersey’s top directors.

The Jersey branch of the Institute of Directors announced yesterday that the first Director of the Year awards would run this year.

Nominations in various categories can be made to honour the top executive and non-executive directors in Jersey’s private, public and voluntary sectors.

The awards, sponsored by law firm Appleby, will culminate in nominees and winners being celebrated at a gala dinner and awards ceremony in June at the Hotel de France.

The announcement was made by the chairman of the IoD branch events sub-committee, Steve Hunt, at the first of their lunch clubs of the year at the Grand Hotel.

This is absolutely superb! No doubt the average working man on the street will readily identify with these people who give of their time for very meagre returns.

Let us all congratulate these selfless and hard working people and let us all be thankful to Appleby for bringing such a humbling scenario to the people of this Island.

I for one am thankful for all of this. One question remains; why on earth did none of these amazing, selfless people not be nominated for inclusion in the new year honours list?

Lunch Clubs, Gala Dinners, who pays for all this mutual backslapping?

    Surely not the customers?
