ISLANDERS gave generously in town on Saturday, raising £6,000 in a British Red Cross collection for Haiti earthquake victims.

Chairman of the Jersey Committee of the British Red Cross, Andrew
Baudains, said that he was delighted with the result and wanted to thank those who has given money.

‘It will go directly to the people of Haiti so that urgent assistance can be provided,’ he said, adding that the committee needed to continue raising funds so that vital supplies could be bought and delivered as soon as possible.

‘The level of devastation and the appalling conditions mean that this disaster requires our financial support immediately for life-saving items including water, food, shelter kits, blankets, medical supplies and assistance,’ he said.

Postal donations made payable to the British Red Cross should be sent to Jane Clarke, treasurer British Red Cross, PO Box 196, Jersey, JE4 9RX.

Oxfam, which has a shop in New Street, has a 100-strong international team working in Haiti and links with a large network of community volunteers who can get aid to the affected people quickly. Its response will include providing clean water, shelter and sanitation.

Cash, cheques and debit/credit card donations can be made at the Oxfam shop in New Street, St Helier.
