A JERSEY woman working in war-torn Afghanistan is appealing for Islanders to provide clothes for youngsters caught up in the conflict.

Retired soldier Rosemary Amy (51) has been in Afghanistan as part of Nato’s International Security Assistance Force since July.

Her team are helping in the fight against explosive devices scattered around the region. Part of their job also involves visiting orphanages and refugee camps housing youngsters affected by the conflict.

It was on one such visit at Christmas that Miss Amy decided to help the orphaned children, who are dressed in thin clothing in freezing temperatures. She is appealing for people to donate shoes, socks, warm clothes, hats, gloves, scarves and toys for the youngsters to make their lives more bearable.

Miss Amy’s sister Fiona Phillips and the 19th Mont Nicolle Guides, are co-ordinating the appeal. Islanders can pack up to two kilogrammes of items into a shoebox or parcel and label it ‘Op Herrick’ in the right hand corner. These can be dropped off at the Communicare Centre, Route des Quennevais. For more information, call Mrs Phillips on 626864.
