A RECORD number of new businesses were set up in the Island last year.

And many of the new entrepreneurs were people who faced redundancy and decided to respond by starting their own ventures.

There were 460 new start-ups, the majority of which were small entities registered by one or two people.

Meanwhile, a body which gives free advice to people setting out in business had its busiest year ever in 2009. Jersey Business Venture saw more people, conducted more interviews and handed out more material than it had done in its 15-year history.

So glad Jersey has free advice on setting up small business, I lived in Jersey for many years and now run a successful business in Australia. I have a friend who was made redundant 3 or 4 years back and I remember a comment he made about the lady in Jersey business Venture who gave him the facts and information he needed to start his dream, he now employes 4 people in his business. It is good to see Jersey has this service.
