If you don’t like the plans, raise £100,000 of the cost

From Roger Crick.
I READ that the overwhelming majority of the 140 persons attending the public meeting in St Ouen favour the States buying back the Pontin’s holiday village site. Could I suggest that they each come up with £100,000 and purchase it themselves?

As one of the silent majority of the Jersey population, quietly working away having paid my income tax and social security contributions and not asked the State for anything in return, I would strongly object to the States making any move to purchase this land.

Surely the proposed plan to return two thirds of the land to nature and have 30 new houses is a sensible compromise?

The situation puts me somewhat in mind of the protest against flooding Queen’s Valley. Far more people take advantage of being able to walk around the reservoir now than ever visited that valley before it was flooded.

I am sure the same will happen if the development is allowed to go ahead and includes public car parking facilities. The end result will be more people taking advantage of the surrounding natural environment than do today.

I would object to any development at Plemont, as i did regarding the flooding of Queen’s Valley, on environmental grounds. An area of high conservation value certainly does not need more public access.

Why should people’s money be used to buy a peice of land that they would not be allowed to access?
