THE police raided a doctor’s surgery yesterday morning after a GP was thought to have fled the Island, leaving thousands of patients’ records locked away.

Dr Nagui Mickhael, who was already under supervision over his working methods, is believed to have had the records of more than 2,000 patients stored in his state-of-the-art surgery on the Albert Pier.

A warrant was issued recently to raid his surgery and a team comprising police officers and Health and data protection officials searched the medical centre yesterday morning.

But unbeknown to them, Dr Mickhael had returned to the Island days earlier. He told the JEP that he had no idea why his medical centre had been raided. He confirmed that the surgery had been closed while he was away, but denied that his patients had been unable to access their medical files.

‘That’s not true,’ he said. ‘There were arrangements for this. My two secretaries and all the patients know whom  to contact. That was all arranged. Both the secretaries have keys.’

Dr Mickhael said that he had been away for his mother’s funeral in Egypt and ended up staying longer than expected because he had had an accident.

Dr Nagui Mickhael stopped practising last year shortly after the General Medical Council found him guilty of a catalogue of failings. Most of his patients registered with other GPs, but according to Health officials, none of them have been able to access their records from St Mark’s Medical Centre.
