He should turn up for work – and not just when it suits

Friday 22nd January 2010, 2:58PM GMT.

From Tim Ransom.
SO Senator Terry Le Main doesn’t think it is anyone else’s business as to where he is when he should be at work, eh?

Well, as a member of the electorate and therefore one of his many bosses, I would like a full explanation, and an apology, as to why he failed to appear for work on Tuesday 19 January.

We have offered him a job with excellent pay and conditions, over-generous holiday entitlement, free phone, free parking and guaranteed job security for at least six years and personally I expect someone who has been employed with us under such generous terms and conditions to not only show a little gratitude but also to turn up for work when we expect him to and not as and when it suits him.

Arrogance, egotism and absenteeism are not ideals we value in our employees and should his attitude not improve then his continued employment with us will be subject to scrutiny, review and probable termination.

And finally, I suggest he takes note of one of his fellow employees, namely Deputy Daniel Wimberley, who was seen running, yes running, in order to make it on time for work. This shows commitment, respect and gratitude for his job and those he works for … something Senator Le Main could definitely do with learning. Then again, maybe he just doesn’t care what we think.

Where does Stuart Syvret fall into all this?

Having a holiday in Tenerife is chicken feed in comparison to Syvret’s behaviour.

Ahh, you cannot beat a good dose of arrogance can you?

If I were to have been in charge of a company\department\team that had been labelled as not fit for purpose (JEP 21st September, 2009), I’d be:
    1) embarrassed to have let things get to this point and
    2) blinking busy to get this issue resolved PDQ

Or has TlM actually sorted out all the issues at Housing and no one knows? ….

Soon to be superannuated Senator Stuart Syvret has effectively admitted – as reported on the pages of this newspaper on 18 January 18 2010 – that he is a washed up political failure.

He had the effrontery to confirm that he is perfectly fit and well, thereby betraying the confidence of a well-meaning Deputy, who was forced to swear in the States Assembly that Syvret’s absence was due to “illness”.

But that is nugatory when compared to Mister Syvret’s less than satisfactory attendance in the States Assembly chamber.

With the sole exception of 7 October 2009, when he voted ‘pour’ for Projet 142/2009, our “Father of the House” has not deigned to show up for the work that local taxpayers are compelled to pay him for since 5 October 2009.

Mister Syvret scuttled away to London on 11 October 2009. He then loudly and proudly proclaimed that the reasons for his all too abrupt escape were to evade having to face the local Magistrate on two extremely trivial charges – and to bring an action in the London courts against the UK Secretary of State for Justice. But he has hoodwinked his diminishing gang of supporters that he “was forced into exile” because of “the Jersey oligarchy” – whatever that may be.

Despite many requests for information on how this enterprise is progressing, the formerly eloquent political “giant” has kept extraordinarily silent.

The sooner he is expelled from our island parliament and stripped of any parliamentary immunity the better.

If he will not face his constituents and supporters, or do the job they are forking out tax money to pay him for, then he will just have to live on his wits in London. It’s a pity there are currently 2.4 million people out of work over there; chippies and joiners are just not needed.

Syvret’s now embarrassed English politician friends will be only too pleased to wash their hands of him. After all, they will shortly have to fight for their own political survival in a general election, and having a Syvret mill stone around their necks will not help them one iota.

I think our politicians do a wonderful job, If TLM needs a Holiday after such a demanding job as it is in the States, then he should be entitled to one, who are WE to demand explanations.

What a lot of huff and puff about nothing. TLM is about one of the very few who will always get back to you on a call and speak in laymans terms. He is not a nine to five man and is often working at weekends and holiday periods. One week away from the state dear me. It has a lot to do with Syvret when you think how much we are paying him for nothing for months. One week for Terry is nothing.

I’m not bothered that TLM was away for a week, we are all entitled to a holiday and perhaps there were circumstances dictating why he was away when he was: a family wedding perhaps?

What I am dissapointed with though is his attitude (if correctly reported) when questioned.

Syvret, on the other hand is a completely different matter. That man should be sacked and be made to return the wages that he has received for doing nothing. And I am not just talking about the past few months, I am talking about the past few years!

I agree, Syvret has got masses to answer for when it comes to States Members going AWOL because he takes the mick!!!!!!!! I am ashamed I ever voted for him and not just for his childish and contemptible behaviour towards other good people of Jersey to date but his continual arrogance afterwards. The sooner he is sacked the better for the people of Jersey.

I am not at all sure why the posts on here are aimed at Syvret. Oh yes, I get it. He is on an extended ‘holiday’ in London and not working for the public. Wrong. It is very obvious that, while he is not in the island, he is still working for the public.

Many people work remotely from the office. Granted he cannot vote on issues but that is just one aspect of his job. I suspect the usual anti-Syvret mob on here see this a good opportunity to draw false comparisons.

On the other hand, and actually relevant to the letter, Le Main was not working. He was lying in the sun at taxpayers expense and has the arrogance to tell us that it’s not our business.

Next you will be blaming Syvret for not warning us about the reclamation site when he suspected the dangers some 20 years ago…

    Oh, that’s right, he did.

Sadly Tim most people fail to understand the work load of many States members which goes beyond the occasion 3 hour speech to rescind the incinerator or to demand millions be spent on needless reviews and consultants but also involves the management of every aspect of our Island. Many States members are fully committed to such work which goes well beyond the normal 9 – 5, 5 days a week that many enjoy and extends well into their family lives. That a States member should give a bit back to their family proves that they are human.

As for your list of benefits, I don’t see many quality candidates queuing up at election time which given many of the comments I am not surprised.

    Oh kate, ‘in the minority’….

How arrogant of you to imply that the majority of the island/world concur with you.

Le Main was AWOL. On holiday, in the sun, not working, being paid by the public. He told us, the tax-payers, that it was not their business. I some how suspect that the majority would consider it to be a public matter. End of.

I rather feel that you were more concerned with defending Le Main by drawing a tenuous analogy in order to serve no other purpose then to maintain your rather silly ‘Syvret is responsible for all society’s ills’ mantra, which, it has to be said, you seem to manage to squeeze in to almost any subject.
