THE business community has been urged to support Treasury Minister Philip Ozouf’s battle to reduce the public sector budget deficit.

A total of 250 business leaders heard the chairman of the Chamber of Commerce’s retail sub-committee, Kevin Keen, issue a rallying cry at a special lunch earlier this week.

Mr Keen urged industry leaders to back the Senator’s efforts to drastically reduce the expected £50 million-a-year structural deficit. ‘Give Senator Ozouf some support. Not many of us can do with new taxes. I know I can’t,’ he said.

Chamber of Commerce president Ray Shead repeated a message he had already uttered publicly that there was an urgent need to reduce States’ spending. He said that revenues raised from taxation should be concentrated on the provision of core services, such as health, education and policing.
