When and where passed did you pass your test and how many times did you take it?
I passed first time after just four lessons in 1982. I took my test in a silver Mitsubishi Colt, having been taught by Ray Murphy.
Your first car?
MK1 Green Ford Capri. It hardly ever started and I spent more time on my push-bike than I did in the car. It had an original eight-track cassette player, which was considerably more reliable than the car – until the only two tapes I had wore out.
Favourite car?
The silver Jaguar XJS which I owned when I was 30. Needless to say, it didn’t last long after the kids came along.
Worst car?
A Mini Metro, which I had for about a week. I don’t know what possessed me, and it’s a memory I had erased until now.
Current car?
The Lexus IS250, which is stunning. It has everything a middle-aged married man with two kids could possibly wish for.
Dream car?
The Bentley Continental GTC Convertible. I love the shape, the sound, the toys – everything apart from the price tag.
Favourite drives?
Driving through France has got to be the most therapeutic way to spend time behind the wheel. Wide-open spaces, beautiful scenery … and not too many police around.
Motorsport interests and heroes?
Formula One’s Michael Schumacher. The guy’s as cool as ice.
Your driving ambitions?
To get behind the wheel of a car on the track and push it to the limit. Might need elastic bands for the trousers, but it would be worth a pair of elastic bands.
What do you carry with you on long journeys?
A flask of coffee, a bottle of water and a loo roll. In case you’re wondering what the loo roll is for, try stopping for the call of nature at a service station in France.
Do you think you’re a good driver?
Of course. And of course my wife and kids don’t.
Who would be your preferred passenger on a long journey?
My wife, of course.
What makes you angry when you are driving?
People who don’t indicate. And running out of loo roll.
Have you ever been involved in a crash?
Only a couple of minor bumps. Let’s hope this isn’t tempting fate …
What do you listen to when you are driving?
Apart from a short period of nursery rhyme tapes a few years ago, it has always been an interesting mix. With the iPod on shuffle, it would be anything from Frank Sinatra to AC/DC
How could Jersey’s roads be improved?
In most cases. with the careful application of some tarmac.
Do you clean your car, and if so, how often?
Yes, every couple of weeks.
