A MAJOR offshore law group appears to be looking to takeover a Jersey or Guernsey legal practice to grab a foothold in the Channel Islands.

Bermudan-founded Conyers Dill and Pearman has confirmed that it is looking at establishing an operation in the Channel Islands this year.

Conyers is considered a ‘magic circle’ offshore firm and used to have an office in Guernsey but that closed a few years ago.

Conyers managing partner John Collis said that the firm was looking at either a merger or an acquisition of an existing firm in either island.

‘Given the sophistication of the two jurisdictions, a merger would be the preferred route,’ he said.
