THE way in which young people can shape our society is the topic under discussion at a special event next week.

The group Redeeming Our Communities, which promotes partnerships between churches, police and local authorities to address the causes of crime, is inviting people of all ages to focus on the theme of ‘celebrating youth’ at the evening, on Wednesday 3 February.

The event at Hautlieu School will be compèred by Debra Green, the founder of the national Christian charity Redeeming Our Communities and will include comments from young people about their aspirations as well as insights from representatives of the Youth Service and various Christian groups.

Home Affairs Minister Ian Le Marquand will also be on hand to answer questions from the audience.

•  The evening begins at 7.30, with the main event starting at 8.

Mike Field, the acting director of ROC Jersey, said that there would also be a variety of information stands at the event showing the work of the many agencies helping to make Jersey a place where young people can flourish.

‘While we will be accentuating the positives, we won’t shy away from the fact that there are some problem areas,’ said Mr Field. ‘And during the evening we will be hearing of ways in which the Christian community is helping to address these in a practical way in co-operation with others, including the forces of law and order.’
