Why not free up residents’ parking when people are at work?

Friday 29th January 2010, 2:59PM GMT.

From D Le Plongeon.
DRIVING up Aquila Road on Monday morning to pop into town for an hour or so, I thought there was plenty of space to park, only to get out of the car to find a signpost saying ‘Residents parking only’.

Never mind, Dorset Street was around the corner, again with plenty of empty spaces, but this was also now residents’ parking, along with Clearview Street and Columbus Street.

Most people who live in that part of town are at work all day. Why not leave People’s Park open to all from, say, 9 am to 4 pm, then bring in residents’ parking?

Most of the States flats in Columbus Street are for pensioners. How can one get shopping for the elderly people, or take them out, when you cannot park? It is getting so that there will not be anywhere free to park in Jersey.

The Constable of St Helier might be making plenty of money on parking permits but, although he rides his bike to work, one day he will be a pensioner who needs someone to pick him up who will need somewhere to park.

    Someone above said

” It is getting so that there will not be anywhere free to park in Jersey.”.

I think that must be the idea. Masquerading behind the specious purpose of “residents’ parking” is yet another stealth tax.

It is noted as well that many of the free 2 or 3 hour slots [for example, the one near Gas Place car park] have aslo disappeared without any consultation or notice to the public.

It seems that the present constable will not be happy until he has well and truly stifled St Helier. He started by closing all the public toilets and he now seems to have moved onto parking. When is the next election due in the parish of St Helier?

All resident parking zones have paycard areas for visitors, USE THEM.
D Le Plongeon might want to “pop into town for an hour or so” That’s what Minden place is for. Residents live in these areas and need access to their properties 24/7, and do not want tightwads like him cruising for a free of charge space causing traffic and polluting the atmosphere.
THAT is why residents are prepared to pay for the privilege.

There were and are some free parking spaces USE THEM. 24 hour access to property not a right and should not be subdsidesed by taxpayer. Let us hope that they return once the present St Helier incumbent departs. This chap is quite right and should be able to park in public streets, particularly as a visitor. The spaces are there. USE THEM.

Yes, the spaces are subsidised. The free spaces should be USED and should not have been removed. The present constable is making it as difficult and expensive as possible. Shame. A few free spaces do still exist, at now at least. Use them.

If I am not mistaken, if a person needs to unload their shopping into their house, the traffic warden will use his/her sense and will not move them on or issue a ticket.
