Data protection campaign against online predators

Children need supervision in the virtual world as well as the normal world, says Mrs Martins
LEAFLETS outlining the dangers of online predators are being sent to all Island primary schools in a drive to keep youngsters safe.
The initiative by data protection commissioner Emma Martins comes as figures in the UK reveal that over 50 per cent of five-toseven-year-olds have internet access.
A quarter of all those children are thought to be unsupervised online. Mrs Martins is tackling the issue following last Thursday’s European Data Protection Day. The day is held to raise awareness about data security and privacy.
Throughout the year, Mrs Martins’s department plan to launch several school-led initiatives to help children become aware of the pitfalls and dangers of the internet.
