Where in town do I park old Dobbin, then?

Wednesday 3rd February 2010, 3:00PM GMT.

From Mike Pitman.
MR Le Plongeon’s letter (JEP, 29 January) suggests that the freeing up of residents’ parking zones during working hours doesn’t go nearly far enough.

The whole scheme should be abandoned immediately and these parking spaces should be restored for the use of all ratepayers and Islanders who have legitimate and pressing reasons to go to town.

The Constable needs reminding that St Helier is the commercial and business centre of this Island and that giving over great swathes of street parking to these privileged residents makes life very difficult for many people and must have an adverse effect on some town businesses.

Where is it written that one has the right to park outside one’s home? Dandara is charging £30,000-plus for such a privilege.

I am expecting delivery of a horse next week – I take it that I can expect to see a couple of parking spaces grassed over in Roseville Street where Dobbin can graze overnight … all at a very reasonable annual charge, of course?

The fault lies with planning who denied permission to many town residents to convert their gardens into parking spaces.

I know, I will rip up my Victorian railings, concrete my postage stamp, one car size, only bit of green in the street front garden, park my car in front of my beautiful Victorian bay window. Give up my residence parking permit that I pay the parish £200 a year for, for the “privilege” of parking in the street where I live, so long as there is a space to put it in ( places are not guaranteed). So as someone who does not pay rates in St Helier, can pop in for a pint of milk and park outside my house instead of using the car parks designed for that type of use.

AHH BUT, It is “written in law” that I must have access to my property. So the parking place outside my house must now become a yellow line where nobody can block my vehicular comings and goings 24/7.

A little bit of engage brain before putting pen to paper would not go amiss here

Got to be said ‘Neigh’ lad! There will be an emission problem! Mind you it may make a diffrence from the usual type coming out of the place at the moment.
