NORTHERN Ireland’s national under-18 footballers were clear winners at Springfield last night and no one can deny that they richly deserved to lift the annual Lynne Nicholson Memorial Trophy.

But Jersey U18s, on a high after their one-nil reverse the night before against the same opposition, can still hold their heads high, as can their coaches.

The Irish, using only two substitutes all night, were clearly giving their top-ranked players a full-on run out before their defence of the Centenary Shield, but they never stopped Jersey trying to play good constructive football.
