JERSEY’S Elizabeth Cann goes into this week’s English National Badminton Championships as the favourite to win the women’s title.

Seeded number one for the competition, which starts tomorrow at the Manchester Velodrome, the 30-year-old has a bye in the first round, held in the afternoon, but takes on the winner of the match between Steffi Clarke and Helena Lewczynska in the evening.

If Cann recaptures the title she will go fifth in the all-time list of champions with four wins behind Gillian Gilks (nee Perrin) and Julia Mann, on eight, Fiona Smith (nee Elliott) on four, and Margaret Lockwood (nee Beck) on five.

The only player in the women’s singles draw that has previously won the title, Cann is the clear favourite and she is confident she can reclaim the title she previously won in 2005, 2007, and 2008, especially following the retirement of last year’s champion Jill Pittard.
