AN independent investigation into the death of a staff nurse following a routine operation has cost the Health department over half a million pounds.

That cash paid for UK consultancy Verita to undertake the inquiry last year into Elizabeth Rourke’s death.

Other costs incurred by the department in relation to Mrs Rourke’s death in October 2006 take the total to £700,000 – excluding the estimated £800,000 cost of suspending consultant gynaecologist John Day.

The £700,000 includes legal fees for advice regarding the death of Mrs Rourke. Some of the money was also spent on legal advice regarding the exclusion of Mr Day.

Health Minister Anne Pryke revealed the total Verita inquiry cost of £558,000 in the States on Tuesday.

The true cost of ‘quality’ is the lack of quality management. The £560,000 Verita bill, is just tip of the iceberg. The true cost is the loss of public confidence in the introspective health service exposed by the report. Jersey is too small to cover all facets of health and must be open to cooperation with others, including the critic of others. Maybe a health alliance between Jersey and Guernsey would be a start; if that is not too much to ask.

As a user of the health service I am concerned at the merry-go-round of locum consultants/doctors. This can be good for nobody, others than those fighting nugatory turf wars.

My commiserations to Anne Pryke, you have a mountain to climb.

The Verita Report is damming and makes dire reading. This is only one of many investigations into investigations which is costing the taxpayer millions of pounds each year and no wonder we are in a black hole.Where will it all end?Probably never as we will be constantly paying for the Governments faux pas and cover ups for decades to come.
