GPs refute Verita referrals claim

ISLAND GPs say claims that they receive ‘financial rewards’ for referring patients to the General Hospital are ‘entirely incorrect’.
The allegation was made in an addendum to the Verita report into the death of staff nurse Elizabeth Rourke after a botched operation, which was published last week.
The addendum to the main report listed 29 matters that had been raised by people who had been interviewed by the independent UK investigators. Verita said that it was outside of its remit to investigate the claims, but suggested that they were of concern and should be examined.
In a letter in today’s JEP, Dr Bryony Perchard refutes the allegation that doctors receive financial rewards for referrals. She has written on behalf of the Primary Care Body, which represents Jersey’s GPs.
