Deputy calls for bigger minimum wage increase

Tuesday 9th February 2010, 2:57PM GMT.

Deputy Geoff Southern.

THE minimum wage should be increased by £3.20 a week to help low-paid workers through the recession, says Deputy Geoff Southern.

He has tabled a counter-proposal to plans by the Employment Forum to raise the minimum wage from £6.08 to £6.20, saying that it should go up to £6.28.

Based on a 40-hour week, the increase only means £3.20 per week, but it adds up to £166.40 over a full year.

Under the Employment Law 2003, the forum – which is made up of workers’
and employers’ representatives – proposes a recommended minimum wage increase that comes into
force automatically in April if no States Member challenges it.

But Deputy Southern said that the proposed increase actually slips back from the previous level of 40.5% of average earnings, and that it is more important than ever to keep the level up at a time of recession.

I honestly don’t know how anyone earning minimum wage survives, I’m on twice that and it’s a struggle especially with everything going up all the time.

£3.20 a week increase is not much but I’m sure it would be welcome amongst those in this income bracket.

And who’s going to help the employers who will be paying these higher wages through the recession? I’ve no objection to the proposal, but there are two sides to every coin…

comment (1) i could not agree more, unless you are learning your job.
the fact that this debate comes up every year, still says to me that our cost of living must be too high.
£3.20 aweek = three litres of milk or the childrens brekfast cereals, its not even a pint of beer , depending where you go.
out of the the £3.20, there is tax and social to come out of this sum. sorry i do not have the figure, as i squandered my time at school.

if you have 10 people its £32.00 a week, would a business fold because of this figure?
with what is proposed with gst and parking going up , it can only lead to high inflation in the long run , so it is only fair that those at the lower end , should at least have a hand with the weekly shop for food.

Any employer paying minimum wage is exploiting his workforce and should be ashamed of themselves.Lets means test the employers and see what they earn, view their homes and see how they live, if unable to pay the increased rate sure lets help them.

I can see that £3.20 a week per employee is going to break them

This is as nothing when compared to the largesse of UK Chancellor of the Exchequer Alastair Darling.

I can’t wait for my first pension payment in April when my weekly State Pension will increase by a whole FIFTY PENCE!

    Aren’t I the lucky one!

isnt it time to consider making the minimum wage realistic? squabbling over whether or not an extra £3.20 per week is affordable to business seems almost pointless if not squalid.

companies already get generous tax breaks – and lets not forget, wages are deductible from their overral tax burden (so in the end, we all end up sharing the cost of the increase in minimum level)

bear in mind an average family with 2 kids and a mortgage will pay not much more than 14% tax effectively, the ‘lucky’ majority of us can afford a bit more to raise our fellow humans out of poverty and misery.

ask yourselves this – would you really want to get out of bed for less than £10 per hour?
