Let’s just leave the guns where they were dumped, please
Wednesday 10th February 2010, 2:59PM GMT.
From Vera Le Cras.
SOME of us remember only too well the guns firing overhead with the shrapnel littering the lawn and even the house.
For those of us who were here during the Occupation, the trauma remained for a long time, if not for ever.
Even our dog, after the war, ran for cover if he heard an aeroplane, as often in the later part of the war it was followed by gunfire.
Noirmont headland became an unspoilt war memorial of tranquillity and peace. One day, to my dismay, I found guns there again. I found it hard to believe. Can we now please leave guns where they were dumped after the war? We were so pleased to see signs of Occupation and
oppression disappear.

I wonder if Vera le Cras has ever read George Orwell’s “1984″, where history was manipulated, ignored and rewritten?
Mrs le Cras seems to advocate sweeping Jersey’s recent history under the insular carpet. She also appears to have conveniently overlooked – or to be ignorant of – the fact that the artillery piece she so strongly objects to raising from the sea off Jersey is to go to Guernsey.
Is the recovery and the historical preservation of a single, sea-corroded, artillery piece, thus offering future generations to see and to handle a (literally) tangible dependent on the whim of a single person?

the trauma of many during the occupation should not be forgotton and yet at the same time, we must ensure that our histories are told and remembered.
rather than removing all evidence of war and atrocities, we should memorialise them. As much as a sign of respect for those killed and damaged, but to show how brutality and war is never far away.
i find it a shame that we have already lost so much occupation sites.
