THE mother of a Jersey athlete suspended under anti-doping rules has today said that her son will fight to clear his name.

Shot-putter Jamie Stevenson has been banned from competition while an investigation is carried out into why he and fellow athlete Kieren Kelly refused to take a drug test last month.

However, Jamie’s mother today said that he was going to fight to clear his name and was remaining positive.

He is currently on a specialist training programme at Loughborough College in preparation for the Commonwealth Games in October. The 20-year-old from Trinity also hopes to represent his country at the London Olympics in 2012.

However, if he is found to have violated anti-doping rules, he faces the possibility of a two-year competition ban.

Speaking this morning, Jamie’s mother, Sue, said: ‘He would like to put his side of the story over, but he has been told not to talk to anyone at the moment. His coach, Geoff Capes, has told him not to talk to anyone at all until it is resolved. Jamie is just standing up for his rights.’
