Liberation holiday ‘would cost £5m’
Thursday 11th February 2010, 3:00PM GMT.

Chamber of Commerce president Ray Shead.
BUSINESS leaders have urged the States to stick to their position over Liberation Day.
Chamber of Commerce president Ray Shead says that a replacement holiday for the one lost because 9 May falls on a Sunday would cost the private sector £5.5m.
He says that the States should keep to their decision to cancel the day off and leave workers a holiday down for the year.
A counter-proposal has been tabled by Deputy Montfort Tadier to have the holiday on the Friday before the weekend.
That looks like the last remaining option for States Members – procedural rules state that the same proposition cannot be debated twice in a three-month period, and Liberation Day is less than three months away.

Surprising how Guernsey and Jersey cannot reach agreement on something as simple as allowing islanders a proper opportunity to celebrate the day on which BOTH islands were liberated.
Monday May 10th is a confirmed public holiday in Guernsey, schools and most businesses are closed.
I can almost see a degree of logic in not having a public holiday at all when it falls on a weeekend, but to possibly hold it on separate days in the two Bailiwicks ? Remarkable.

What a surprise that Mr Shead is urging such a thing, it’s all about money money money !
If the States won’t allow their residents to celebrate such a historic day then you may find a boycott against spending money that day and lots of sick days from staff, I wonder how much that would cost you!

A well deserved day off for the hard working?
…or saving a small fraction for the powers of capital?
Easy decision.

Guernsey and Jersey have always had it on different days as Guernsey was liberated on the 8th May 1945 and Jersey on the 9th May 1945.
Your comment shows an interest in a days holiday and not in remembering a very important piece of Jersey history as you would have known this fact!

The 9th is a Sunday and therefore a day off for the majority so you have the ability to remember it. You could go to Liberation Square, or perhaps reflect in the Royal Square or even visit the war tunnels.

I cannot fathom the comments that keep being posted when this story and the original story were posted.
You keep harping on about celebrating the day the island was liberated…..well it’s always been the 9th so celebrate on the 9th and stop looking for an extra day off work!!!

Stop participating….Just Stop everything…..
The only way anything will change is if we all just stop and do no comply.
Even if this is for one day.
Buy food on a different day.
Stop purchasing needless items and putting yourselves into more debt for one day.
Just enjoy your family and friends for one day.
Just one day.
Things need to change.

“A well deserved day off for the hard working?…”
If they want the day off many could just book it as holiday. Why should I be expected to pay for them not to work? Why do you expect something for nothing?

Liberation Day is on the 9th May – great, celebrate on the 9th May and return to work on the 10th May. Suspect this may be a little to complicated for some to fathom…

I agree 100%, I have posted on the other blogs, covering the same issue, and in short Liberation Day is May 9th, end of story!!!!!!!

Try as i might, I really can’t see what all the fuss is about. Liberation Day is on the 9th and falls on a Sunday. If there is any celebrating to do, surely it should be on the actual day (as many posts on the previous article suggest that folk that were actally liberated, do celebrate on the 9th).
Why is there a need to take the Monday off?
