How to get teenagers off the streets? Give them things to do!

From Gabby Goncalves.
ON behalf of local teenagers, I would like to bring to people’s notice that we are really disappointed that there is very little for teenagers to do in this Island. Or should that be there is nothing for us to do which doesn’t cost a lot of money.

There is bowling and there are a few other attractions, but they are too expensive for children, especially if they also have to pay to get there.

However, if the authorities provided, for example, cafés just for the young, preferably internet cafés, where teenagers could have something to eat and chill out with friends, this would immediately take large numbers of teenagers off the streets or from the Weighbridge, where they often hang around, especially of a weekend. Also, if there was a fun house like there used to be a few years ago, that too would give us something to do and somewhere to go.

Instead of that, at the moment anything that’s on offer – which isn’t that much anyway – costs up to £20 or more for just one visit, after allowing for transport and something to eat. That is a huge amount of money to pay if you’re not working and have only a weekly allowance.

It would be good to see some more parks in Jersey for young children to be able to play football and enjoy their time. Also, the funfair only comes once a year, while children my age would prefer to see it more often because there is nothing for young children to do in town of an evening.

The States and the people of Jersey are always complaining about young children always making hassle and noise and vandalising things. Well if they did something about it and provided more facilities for us, there would be no reason for bored teenagers to hang around at the Weighbridge.

In the long term, with more facilities and designated places for us to go and relax, without it costing youngsters a great deal, it would save money in the long term. States Members should consider it.

Where is this teenager coming from. I have had four children two of whom are still teenagers. There is plenty to do on the island quite cheaply it just depends what you want to do. Fishing, walking , local history, organised games winter or summer on the beach plenty of room to kick a football when the itde is out,go to the Parish Hall see where you can help in your parish it dosen’t have to be all about money. Take a packed lunch you don’t always have to eat out come on what is wrong with you.

“That is a huge amount of money to pay if you’re not working and have only a weekly allowance.”

And that is the sort of thinking that causes the problem in the first place.

If they want something, earn it !
don’t expect something for nothing all the time

I think it’s great that Gabby has taken the time to write to the paper, it’s a heck of a lot more than some youths have done.

Still, PJG is right, it should be earned!

As adults we pay for what we use, if we have kids then we have to pay for what our kids use also, nothing is free.

Plenty of kids manage to grow up law-abiding while apparently having ‘nothing to do’, as did many of us adults, so this is simply a feeble excuse used by those that will disobey the law no matter what. Give them something to do and it won’t be enough because they won’t be allowed to drink and smoke underage.

Gabby, no-one is stopping you getting together with other youths, coming up with some ideas yourselves, getting some adults on board and fundraising to pay for it. You could even look into applying for grants.

Firstly, didn’t we have an internet cafés at Sand Street years ago? I don’t remember seeing flocks of teenagers rushing down there.

Why would we need more parks? Is there not enough space on the beaches or Millbrook?

“The States and the people of Jersey are always complaining about young children always making hassle and noise and vandalising things. Well if they did something about it and provided more facilities for us, there would be no reason for bored teenagers to hang around at the Weighbridge.”
Just because teenagers are bored, that does not give a reason to cause hassle, noise and vandalise things. Also you know full well that Weightbridge is not the only place teenagers hang around.

“In the long term, with more facilities and designated places for us to go and relax, without it costing youngsters a great deal, it would save money in the long term.”
I don’t quite get this comment, us adult’s have to pay more in taxes, so you can have some more facilities to keep you entertained, and would save us more money in the long term. How will it save us money? Do you mean we will not have to get repairing stuff you and your fellow bored teenagers have vandalised?

Sorry Gabby if I seem rude but when I was a teenager I earned my money on a Paper round and then at a supermarket. With that money I use to buy fishing gear to go fishing. I spent most of my summers on the piers or rocks around the Island. As per #1 Kate I totally agree with her, there is loads to do on this Island if you look, the problem is teenagers want things like video games, and big flashing lights. All of which cost huge amounts of money.
