States: When the cat’s away …
Thursday 18th February 2010, 3:00PM GMT.
From Terry Connor.
THOUGH the timing was ill judged, no one could deny Senator Terry Le Sueur the right (or need) to seek absolution, and as our tourism industry is in decline and visits to the Island by the Almighty are therefore presumably becoming fewer, he felt obliged to travel to ‘God’s own country’ to meet his maker.
But what a perfect platform for a prominent professional politician to parade publicly his personal piety in the purlieu of a prestigious and popular president.
More importantly, this again focuses on the question of non-attendance of Members at States meetings.
In view of the limp or lackadaisical pressure in this regard, coupled with the low quorums in place and the mere 51% majority required for the passage of legislation, there is increasing danger of poorly debated and unrepresentative edicts or expensive white elephants being ratified on the strength of a single vote (or ring binder).
