A CALL has been made for an economic ‘leakage’ study to be carried out in the Island, following an address made this week by a world expert on community economics.
Michael Shuman spoke to members of Jersey’s Chamber of Commerce who attended a lunch at the Pomme d’Or Hotel on Wednesday. However, Mr Shuman was not in the Island but was speaking live from Washington DC.
The theme of his address was how investing in local businesses could lead to successful economic diversity and growth. He said the Island could benefit strongly from investing in local businesses.
Following the speech, Jersey Chamber of Commerce vice-president David Warr said that he would be looking for the States to carry out a ‘leakage’ study into the Island’s economy.

i was wondering what economic leakage ment, dullard that i can be sometimes.
was it the transiant labour that , emptied the bank account and, shipped out the , hard earned cash to home.or outsiders buying into a local company and extracting the profit?
the way that, you can invest in a local company, must be to buy shares in it, and apply some leverage to it to operate, the way you would like it.
please educate me here , if iam wrong, in my thinking.
or are we saying , use the local firm, they are still here , after the non jersey registered van has gone on to the boat?

I always invest locally – the local couriers deliver all of my half price internet sourced goods.

David Brown comment 1 – clearly I am from the same school of thick as you, doh got it now.
I am English having settled hereover 20 years agoso am not racist against my own people however I firmly beleive that preference with local contracts should be given to local firms and money kept within the island unless the work is of such a specialist nature that local labour cannot undertake.
You have to blame the government that allows it to happen don’t you ( I use the word government in the loosest possible terms )

mulvie le phew.
like myself , you look to be here for the long haul.
if our work is chipped away at, its off to la motte street.
and agree if the work is specialist and no one here can do it then , yes we need someone, one would hope they trainned a local to assist and maybe carry out further work.

My friend purchased in the last 10 days a camera from a reputable St Helier shop and paid £190.00 (a discount on the ticket price as it was the last one) she was delighted when the shop manager threw in a free camera case.
Seeing the results of the photos, and my own camera having been dropped by a teenager I thought rather than trawling through reviews i would buy the same.
As she had been told it was the last one I thought I would check online before seeing if the shop could order one for me. £114.88, being £135 less VAT from Amazon, with free postage. I also saved GST of 3%.
I full support local businesses but the convenience of shopping online, no car parks, no rushing back to the car-park to avoid £60 fine, tea on tap, and no scratches on my car – businesses are going to have to work harder.
I can justify a £10-£15 difference, £75 or more than 50% increase is absolutely scandalous!

I bet you can’t justify it really, but I’d love to hear you try Cathy.
Go on, please try.
