Over 40 people are now known to have died as a result of the massive mudslides in Madeira on Saturday.
It is feared that the death toll of 42 could rise as rescue workers search mud-filled roads and properties. The number of injured is reported to be more than 120.
Torrential rainfall at the height of Saturday’s storm caused tons of mud, stones and debris to be brought down slopes, destroying homes, overturning cars and streaming into the streets of the capital Funchal and other areas.
The Airport was closed and telephone links cut, although it has been possible to text on some phones and to telephone on some landlines.
Thousands of Islanders have been trying to make contact with loved ones and the States Police, who have Portuguese speaking officers available, have offered help. They ask anyone needing assistance to call them on 612612.
It is hoped that emergency telephone lines will be in operation on Monday morning.
A group of young Jersey musicians in Madeira on an exchange trip are all safe and already planning a fund-raising concert. The charity Jersey Side by Side will also be giving support.
• A full report on Jersey’s response will be published in Monday’s Jersey Evening Post.
