Forty two people have died as a result of the massive mudslides in Madeira on Saturday.
It is feared that the death toll could rise as rescue workers search mud-filled roads and properties. The number of injured is reported to be more than 120.
Torrential rainfall at the height of Saturday’s storm caused tons of mud, stones and debris to be brought down slopes, destroying homes, overturning cars and streaming into the streets of the capital Funchal and other areas.
The Airport was closed and telephone links cut, although it has been possible to text on some phones and to telephone on some landlines.
TWO emergency numbers have been issued for Islanders seeking information about relatives or friends in Madeira.
The numbers to call are:
00 351 291 203 805
00 351 291 203 806
