AN Islander in her 20s has been left devastated after her grandmother was killed in the mudslides and floods in Madeira.

Yesterday the woman, who has lived in Jersey for many years, was being consoled by her friend Rosa Encarnasao, who works at Moita’s Bistro in Havre des Pas.

Mrs Encarnasao told the JEP: ‘My friend’s grandmother lived in Funchal and died in the floods. She is too traumatised to speak. She is in no condition to talk and is very upset.’

The flooding was caused by the worst storm to hit the Portuguese holiday Island since 1993, and the heavy rain has forced about 250 people from their homes.
