ISLANDERS have been urged by the Bailiff, Michael Birt, to support the Jersey Side by Side appeal for Madeira following the weekend flood disaster.

In a letter to the president and people of Madeira, Mr Birt wrote that the news and scenes of carnage had ‘touched the hearts’ of Islanders and left many with a ‘personal sense of shock’.

Three days of mourning have been declared in Madeira after flash floods and mudslides caused by freak weather conditions claimed at least 42 lives. The death toll is expected to rise as the search continues for more bodies.

As the States sitting began this morning, Deputy Bailiff William Bailhache read the letter to States Members, who responded with sustained applause.
