Joanna Matthews in action at Igls
JERSEY has its very own skeleton bobsleigh star in the making as Joanna Matthews put in an impressive performance at the Army Novice Championships in Igls, Austria.
Finishing second in the ladies’ skeleton race with runs of 58 and 59 seconds, respectively, the Jersey Bobsleigh Club member’s efforts placed her ninth out of 15 overall in an event featuring Great Britain representatives and coaches.
There was a similar success for the two-man bobsleigh crew of Paul Murray, driver, and brakeman Brian ‘Red’ Walshe as they, too, finished second in the men’s novice competition with race times of 57.45 and 57.39 sec.
The ladies’ bobsleigh teams found themselves up against the men’s crew as there were no female army competitors in the event due to operational commitments.
