More redundancies expected

Chamber of Commerce president Ray Shead.
ABOUT one in six Island companies which responded to a business confidence survey expect to make staff redundant this year.
And about 40 per cent intend to freeze pay in 2010. However, a quarter said that they will change their wage structure to keep people in work.
Seventy-seven firms responded to the Jersey Chamber of Commerce survey and 15 per cent said they anticipated that they would lay off employees during 2010. But the good news was that the results also showed a degree of confidence returning to the Island’s business community.
Chamber president Ray Shead said it seemed optimism was ‘tentatively’ coming back to the local economy.
About 40 per cent of respondents predicted that the market would improve this year with just ten per cent forecasting that prospects would worsen.

A pay freeze for the 2nd year running yippee, unless you are a states employee in which case you will have been offered a 2% rise which no doubt you will threaten to strike about unless it is increased.
Meantime I note that parking charges at the airport have increased by 20%, a 10 minute stay in the short term car park which used to be free for half an hour, then 50P and is now 60P. You’ve got to hand it to the states, they know how to screw us by introducing a 20% increase in charges for airport parking and a 14% increase for car park and street parking in a year when no one got a pay rise.
The survey is of course meaningless without knowing how many firms exist in Jersey,if 77 firms responded how many did not? I love the statistics though,”about one in six” “40% pay freeze” ” “a quarter will change their wage structure”

School bus fares have also gone up an inflation busting 20%.
How do they justify this – especially when the public subsidise connex anywhere between 2 and 5 million a year.
Its cheaper to drive kids to school now.

The school bus fares may have increased by nearly 20% but that’s probably something to do with the fact school bus fares haven’t increased for 5 or 6 years. Anyway, surely it makes sense that the users of the service contribute more to it than the tax payers that do not.
And if people insist in driving their kids 1/2 mile down the road then of course it’s going to be more expensive to travel by bus!
