AN Islander was relieved last night to hear that her friends had survived the Chilean earthquake on Saturday.

Film-maker Daniela Rusowsky Funk had been waiting anxiously for news following the devastating earthquake in which at least 723 people are known to have died

She has family in Viña Del Mar, Santiago, and Curico and was worried that they might be injured following the 8.8-magnitude quake.

Mrs Funk, who is 35 and lives in St John with husband Dr Stephan Funk and children Gittel and Ilana, was particularly worried about a family friend who lived in the fishing village of Llicoa.

But last night she found out that her friend and her family were safe and were living in tents in the hills near their home. University students are heading to the area to distribute medical supplies.
