UK-STYLE anti-social behaviour orders should be introduced to help the courts to crack down on the Island’s most persistent offenders, acting chief police officer David Warcup has said.

The controversial court orders – known as Asbos – which impose restrictions on a person’s movements or behaviour have attracted criticism since they were introduced across the UK in 1999.

Many critics say that they are ineffective and are simply worn as ‘a badge of honour’ by young tearaways. But Mr Warcup said that Asbos could help to reduce crime in Jersey if they were used selectively by the courts.

The UK has two types of Asbo – those imposed by a magistrate after a case is brought by the police or council on behalf of affected residents, and those handed down by a magistrate or judge after a defendant has been convicted of a criminal offence.
