What’s happened to our broccoli business?

Thursday 4th March 2010, 3:00PM GMT.

From Martin Garthwaite.
I WAS horrified to discover in Checkers supermarket broccoli wrapped in cling-film with a ‘produce of Spain’ label.

One wonders if farming in Jersey has any future when supermarkets behave in this way.

Acres of broccoli grow in fields around us and in Jersey generally. Perhaps a director of the said supermarket could explain the situation to us.

“What’s happened to our broccoli business?” trumpets the headline to this letter.

    The answer is painfully simple.

It has gone the same way as out tourism business, it has gone the same way as our cut flower business, it has gone the same way as our tomato business – all sacrificed on the altar of the almighty finance industry.

This paper reported a few days ago that, if ferries and freighters were prevented from offloading their cargoes of imported food, this island would be starving after only ten days.

    Food for thought.
