CHILDREN from the Salvation Army’s toddler group braved the cold on Wednesday to collect money for the Jersey Side by Side appeal for Madeira.

The group, which included parents and grandparents of the children, collected around £300 in sponsorship and donations for the appeal, which was set up after flash floods devastated Madeira last month, killing 42 people.

The day’s proceeds from the Salvation Army charity shop and Friendship Café at Minden Place, the final amount of which is not yet known, will also be donated to the appeal.
Organiser Major Irene Kerrison said the day had been a huge success, with a lot of money collected for a worthy cause.

‘It was about showing people that we care about the people of Madeira who we in Jersey have a special relationship with,’ she said.

‘It was also good for the parents and children to feel that they were doing something for the appeal.’
