Sometimes I wonder why I work – it’s the workers who miss out
Saturday 6th March 2010, 2:59PM GMT.
From Michael Lihou.
BY offering a 2% pay rise to teachers and manual workers over a two-year deal, Chief Minister Terry Le Sueur is just trying to make the teachers and manual workers look bad by using the recession as an excuse for such a poor offer as a pay rise to us all.
Then to top it off, another politician says he is going to put the rents up on all Housing’s rental stock by 2.5%, so there goes my 2% pay rise along with 0.5% of my wages already from this year, so we are back to square one.
We are told that everyone is in the same boat, but those who are unemployed, for whatever reason, have their rents paid for them by social security, so it has no effect on their income. However, those who do work are yet again going to lose out on their wages.
Sometimes I wonder what I’m doing working for a living in this Island in which I was born. I should have upped sticks years ago and gone to work abroad, where at least the working man isn’t getting ripped off by the government every year.
So, does Senator Le Sueur still think his offer of 2% is fair to those who are going to have it taken off them as soon as it hits their pay packet to pay for a rent increase along with another 0.5% on top?
