A FORMER Islander is doing his bit for those devastated by the January earthquake in Haiti which killed more than 230,000 people by raising an astonishing £200,000.
Peter Filleul (59), who lives in the British overseas territory of Montserrat in the Caribbean, recently organised for 20 of that island’s musical maestros to perform at a concert in January to raise money for those affected by the quake. The concert was held at the Montserrat Cultural Centre.
Peter – a musician who developed the score for the famous West End musical Blood Brothers among many other achievements – managed to sign up musicians including King Arrow, Kulcha Don, Hero and various calypso artists.
The former Victoria College student, who will be in Montserrat for the next month, said: ‘The Cultural Centre was actually built from the generosity of musicians and other benefactors and it is great that it can now be used to help others.’
His wife, Sian, organised a fun day full of activities that started at 3 pm and ran late into the evening.
Peter’s father, former Deputy Don Filleul, who lives in St Lawrence, said: ‘I was proud to hear about what my son had been doing and it is nice to see that Jerseymen abroad display the same instant response to disasters as they do here.
‘He dropped out of what I would call normal life to become a rock musician, and he did very well with various bands.’
Peter was in The Band Called O and also worked on the music for the television series of The Life and Loves of a She-Devil and King of the Ghetto.
