MONTY MANIA: Field Marsh Viscount Montgomery of Alamein was on a private visit to the Island in 1948 when he interrupted his stay to attend a non-denominational combined youth service at St Mark’s Church. Thousands lined the route from Government House, where he was staying as a guest of His Excellency the Lieut-Governor, Lieut-General Sir Edward Grasett and Lady Grasett (pictured with him arriving at the church), in the hope of catching a glimpse of the distinguished wartime commander (00835982)
