Who’s top of the expenses charts?

Friday 12th March 2010, 2:59PM GMT.

THE minister in charge of saving money has topped the expenses chart for 2009.

Treasury Minister Philip Ozouf claimed £5,762 of taxpayers’ money in travel and accommodation expenses last year, over £2,000 more than any of his colleagues.

Chief Minister Terry Le Sueur came in second with £3,757 for travel and accommodation, while Assistant Education Minister Andrew Green racked up £1,929 in travel, accommodation and entertainment expenses.

Deputy Green’s claim is by far the highest of any of the assistant
ministers – more than five times the amount claimed by any of the 13 others.

What a non story – or rather a story of restraint and good management by all concerned – your average chief executive spends these sums in his sleep! I also seem to recall that Sen.Ozouf spent some time off island assisting in trade promotion for Jersey.

    Good on yer Phil!

    A rather simplistic article.

A £5,762 expenses bill is nothing compared to the £65m budget overspend. Get real JEP.

Once again Mr Green’s Name is in the spotlight, first for wasting government time with his own personal agenda and now by being loose with the publics money. He has only been in government a short time but is already proving himself to be the usual self serving non entity as the others.

Can’t believe I’ve wasted 2 min of my life reading such a non-story.
As Mike R mentions these sort of sums would be spent in a few minutes in private sector.

    Quiet news day obviously.

An article surely set to deliberately stir things up. £5k in a year really isn’t a huge amount when applied to travel expenses. The treasury minister (regardless of who it is) has a role which above all others probably requires him to travel the most. I would guess it equates to roughly one trip to London a fortnight. I’d hazard a guess that many company directors in Jersey have to make similar trips.

I know that Philip Ozouf went on a promotional visit to India that I also attended and was very beneficial in forging links with the Island.

He traveled in Economy even though it was a long haul flight! Does not seem like he is taking advantage at all based on that fact.

These levels of expenses for the most senior roles seem very low for the role they have to play.

The UK has made it clear that in the International arena we have to very much represent ourselves so increased travel expenses has to be expected.

Philip Ozouf is trying to improve the financial condition of the island at a time of world economic chaos! This small expenses bill is of public interest but is almost irrelevant in terms of the challenges ahead.

Allow him time to sort this mess out, it is my belief that he will do it. He pulls no punches with the civil service, he has made it clear that he is committed to streamlining government!

No-one else in government has made that wide promise as far as I’m aware! I’m not a fan of States Members but I believe Mr Ozouf has integrity. Some people make difficult decisions, others say nothing and do nothing.

Who do you want to listen to? I’m intrigued!

To be fair these figures are very modest indeed, in which case the parties to be concerned are to be commended for their restraint. Such a pity that similar restraint isn’t shown when it comes to their respective departments and major expenses.

I actually think Philip Ozouf is more hands on with the States economic mess at the moment than anybody else in the past and this is whilst backbenchers winge and moan though never suggest any solutions to help. He is pulling no punches, he has been open about the future problems of the Island and nobody can complain that they now don’t know whats going on. He has even gone down the route of telling 1.(1)K’s that the ridiculous low tax days are over. We should support Philip instead of moaning about some pathetic expenses bill which was probably only used to promote Jersey’s number one industry as it is.

Considering all the frivolous spending that our ministers are notoriously famous for this does seem a tad too low.

Perhaps the real “expenses” have been hidden under a different guise to prevent us from really knowing what they are all skimming off the tax payer???

It’s the ones who aren’t claiming any expenses that are probably who you should be invetsigating – as far as I can remember sitting on your arse all day doing nothing doesn’t incur any cost.

£5,762 spent on travel and expenses, presumably on Island business actually isn’t alot. Works out at just over 6p per person.

£3,000,000 spent digging up a coconut is! I’d like my £33.33 refunded back please!

I agree, these sums are not very high – it must depend on whether or not people leave the island.

MUCH more important is why 123 residents of 1(i)(k)status are paying 10% tax, and only an average of 100 000 each. This is nothing for them so why are they so important to Jersey? Why give them all those concessions and invite them in? So they can do a lot of building, which raises building costs and requires more immigration? So that lovely headland sites can be wrecked with mansions and fences? So that said mansions can remain empty 6 months a year. Let’s concentrate on that rather than a paltry few thousand. Sounds as if Terry Le Sueur has been paying for his trips out of his own pocket – he could hardly have gone to USA for that amount.
