AN Island men’s bowls quartet are celebrating after winning the British indoor bowls title by just one point.

The ‘Jersey Boys’ of Lee Nixon, John Lowery, Jamie Macdonald and Thomas Greechan came up trumps at the Dewars Centre in Perth last night with an incredible 24-23 final win over a Portsmouth Victory quartet skipped by Gary Starks.

The  Jersey victory came after an epic battle, which they looked like losing when they trailed, 20-16 with only four ends left to play.

The general consensus among the spectators was that they were worthy winners of the British Isles four title – though their victory owed much to a mistake made by Starks on the 18th end, which gifted six shots to Jersey, who were suddenly ahead, 22-20.

‘If that hadn’t happened, I’m pretty sure we would have lost that game,’ admitted Greechan. ‘Quite frankly, we were disappointed with the way we played the final – but we did get it together over the last three ends, and took advantage of our good fortune.’
