Chief Minister urges unions to settle

THE Chief Minister has called on States employees to follow civil servants and settle their pay disputes.
With both teachers and firefighters threatening industrial action, Senator Terry Le Sueur appealed for workers’ support in reducing the Island’s growing deficit.
He spoke yesterday after the trade unions representing the 2,500 public sector white-collar workers agreed to a two per cent pay rise from both January 2010 and January 2011.
However, the plea looks likely to face stiff opposition, with civil service union leaders saying their members’ decision should not detract from the significance of grievances of other States workers.
