JERSEY could still be asked to burn Guernsey’s waste after the island’s States decided against resurrecting their incinerator plans yesterday.

Guernsey’s States Members voted 27–16 against a proposition led by Deputy Tony Spruce, who wanted the States to overturn its decision taken in February to scrap the £93 million plant.

It leaves the way open for Jersey and Guernsey to strike a deal involving Jersey’s half-built plant at La Collette when it opens in 2011.

It was revealed last month that informal discussions had taken place, and Jersey’s Transport and Technical Minister, Mike Jackson, confirmed that the Island was open to such a deal, which could earn Jersey up to £4 million a year.

I think this should go to a public vote – if Guernsey’s residents don t want to burn their waste, why should we? For once I would like to hear a good reason and not one that includes monetary gain, why we should even consider this.

“such a deal, which could earn Jersey up to £4 million a year.”

is that discounting the cost to public health, air quality and marine biodiversity?

At least the states of Guernsey listened to the voice of the people.

Our states members should take a leaf out of their counter parts books, out states members ignored the voice of jersey!!!!!

I am sure the burning of Guernsey’s waste has already been agreed in principle behind closed doors, just will we ever benefit from the millions generated in revenue, no it will get wasted – may be with higher maintenance bills because of the extended usage for the incinerator that no one wants!!!!!!!!

Perhaps a new motto for Jersey could be ‘Wealth before Health’.

If your worried about “the cost to public health, air quality and marine biodiversity” then surly one incinerator is better than two and how much difference to Jersey’s health, air quality or marine biodiversity will there be if Guernsey have their own incinerator a few miles away.

During the debate on the Guernsey incinerator, one of the speeches that helped to swing the vote was made by our CM Lyndon.
In that speech he refered to a letter he had recently recieved from your CM Terry.
The gist of which was, no problem to take your waste, juste the price to agree upon.

Lara Luke…spot on ,the damage to peoples health is being purposely ignored, incineration of waste vaporises heavy metals making the PM2.5 particles particles emitted even more lethal when inhaled go into the deepest part your lungs as they escape the abatement equipment…..which those who operate incineration will deny for obvious reasons.this flawed C.O.M govt cares not a jot about the peoples welfare..only commercial considerations…their lack of humanity and common decency is spiritually and morally bankrupt.Demand reform…

From the comments above one has to admire the States of Guernsey for their backbone in having their waste strategy dictated by popular opinion.
Now let Guernsey show us how waste disposal should be tackled – not forgetting that to date there only solution is a landfill site that has been burning for 30 years and all sewerage is flushed untreated into the English Channel.

The Jersey States, having taken their spineless and dictatorial decision to build the unpopular energy from waste incinerator should not corrupt the integrity of our sister Island by accepting their waste. This is the only way we will know for sure whether our ministers acted with integrity in its construction.
