‘Semi-rural’ supermarket plan taken out of report
Friday 26th March 2010, 2:58PM GMT.

Economic Development Minister Alan Maclean
SECTIONS of a leaked report saying that a new supermarket should be built on a ‘semi-rural’ site have been wiped out of the final version by Economic Development Minister Alan Maclean.
The new report also backtracks on the importance of a new supermarket – the leaked version said that the minister believed that ‘a new large food store operator was essential to the Island’s retail sector’.
The latest version says just that ‘an additional large food store operator should not be prevented’. Senator Maclean said that the Planning department told him that there must be potential sites in the built-up area and that the language in the report had been ‘clarified’.
Senator Maclean said that the main thrust of the report had not changed, and that a ‘sequential test’ seeking a new supermarket site in town, then the outskirts of town before finally looking to semi-rural areas, would still be applied. He denied that there was anything sinister about the changes, saying that they were part of the normal consultation process.

Sure, the “main thrust” has not changed. Only the bits that make him out to be a complete buffoon have been taken out.

What do supermarkets want? A lot of customers through the door all the time. A small UK supermarket unless it is actually in a town has a car park the size of the CO-OP at St peter’s.
Where is a Supermarket in UK terms, going to fit? If it does go in town no one from outside can use it, they’d have to drive there and where would you park? If its out of town, and be honest anywhere outside Town is semi -ruraul, Jersey is to damm small to have urban/rural boundries, then the c ar park will take as much room as the store! UK based supermarket chains are intrested in volumes of sales. Why would any want to go to Jersy? There aren’t enough people! Even a small UK supermarket would fit the CO-OP in St Peters into its car park, and leave room for the store!

Thank heavens. I thought he’d finally come out in favour of the common man rather than vested interests. The world is back to normal.

Truthseeker #4 How cynical ! you’ll think differently when he becomes our next Chief Minister now that Ben Shenton has shown that he is somewhat less than capable as well.

Many people posted comments on various sites relating to the fact that a third supermarket in Jersey would not pay any Income Tax, well, as confirmed by Senator Perchard on the B.B.C. “Talk Back” yesterday, none of our existing ones do either.
Sandpiper and Co-op are owned off Island.
Local companies are treated disgracefully and must be incensed at subsidising them.
