THE amount raised by the Jersey Side by Side appeal for Madeira could top the £100,000 mark, organisers have said.

Around £75,000 is thought to have been raised so far and the charity has been impressed by the number of fundraising events still being held over a month after the tragedy struck the Portuguese island killing 42 people.

The appeal will be drawn to a close at the end of the month with the collection tins and boxes collected in, but the charity will continue to support any events or fundraising that people wish to carry out.

In the last few days thousands of pounds have been handed over to the charity by Islanders all keen to do their bit.

On Tuesday, contractors at the incinerator at La Collette handed over £1,100 raised through raffles, quizzes and donations, while last week’s fundraising event organised by the Jersey Association of Architects raised £530.
