In the driving seat: John Refault
Thursday 1st April 2010, 3:00PM BST.
John Refault is chairman of the Jersey Old Motor Club and Constable of St Peter.
When and where did you pass your test and how many times did you take it?
I passed my driving test in Jersey in 1965 at the second attempt. The first time, I had only received instruction from friends, but the second time was after a couple of lessons with a professional driving instructor.
Your first car?
A Vauxhall Victor similar to the one shown below – full of rust and not all that reliable. Unfortunately, it put me off Vauxhalls for life!
Favourite car?
The Jaguar S Type 2001 model. That was the first and probably the only quality new car I have bought – and probably the last! It lived most of the time in the garage while I drove what I called a day car, and I eventually sold it because it was so little used. Now it has been replaced in my affection by my 1931 Lagonda Low Chassis Tourer, which is also little used but much tinkered with and fully enjoyed.
Worst car?
Probably my first car!
Current car?
My day car is a Mini Cooper, which is an absolute pleasure to drive and park. It is also often borrowed by the family.
Dream car?
The latest Jaguar XK8 DHC is as iconic as the original E Type and in my view a classic of quality in the making. It is also known as the poor man’s Aston Martin, but I’m happy with that.
Favourite drive?
In the right car, anywhere, just for the sheer pleasure of driving.
Motorsport interests and heroes?
Vintage cars and vintage rallies. In 2007 I completed the 10,000-mile Peking to Paris rally in a 1938 Buick Straight Eight – both a challenge and a delight.
Driving ambitions?
Just to keep on driving, for the freedom and the enjoyment.
Do you think you are a good driver?
Of course – doesn’t everyone say that?
What do you always carry with you on long journeys?
A road map.
Who would be your preferred passenger on a long journey?
A collection of various CDs and the freedom to drive as the mood and conditions allow me without challenge or ‘advice’.
What makes you angry when you are driving?
Other motorists who don’t anticipate things and who seem to just come up against a problem and sit there while they think about it.
Have you ever been involved in a crash?
Yes – quite a severe one in my Jaguar S Type when a lorry presented itself coming broadside around a bend in Trinity. I was almost stopped when the rear offside wheel of the lorry batted me backwards up the road. The Jag was badly bent, with the whole front pushed in, but we were safe in the car.
What do you listen to when you are driving?
First thing in the morning, Radio 4, and in the evening, Drive Time on Radio Jersey. When I am driving for pleasure I usually put on a CD, unless I’m in the Lagonda – in which case, I just listen to the wind.
How could Jersey’s roads be improved?
How long have we got? Seriously, Jersey’s roads are Jersey’s country roads and in the main I accept them because of that – but not the ever-present roadworks and congestion.
Do you clean your car, and if so, how often?
My day car I mostly wash once a week, but my Lagonda I wash every time it goes out. (My wife usually polishes the Lagonda for me!)
