A CONTROVERSIAL EU fishing ban which could have a devastating impact on the Jersey fleet has been delayed by at least one month.

The Europe-wide ban on fishing for undulate rays was due to be extended to Jersey waters at the end of March after French fishermen lost an appeal against the regulations.

But the new rules will not come into force for at least another four weeks after Jersey fishermen asked the Economic Development Department to clarify the Island’s legal position.

They are asking whether the ban on catching the fish – often sold as skate – can legally be extended to Jersey’s inshore coastal waters.

It is only a delay. The trouble is Dave that they are not “crown Dependendancy Waters – they are EU waters. Sad but true.

This fish is an endangered species, so the ban should be imposed with immediate effect. As with most elasmobranchs due to the fact it matures at a later stage than other fish, it has less opportunity to have offspring, therefore diminishing the population faster. The European Council do not take their decisions lightly, and therefore we should accept and recognise the legislation which will inevitably be enforced in the local waters. Trammel net fishing remains extremely wasteful, with a much higher percentage of discard than other more efficient fishing methods. The fishermen need to think more about the longer term need for conservation and sustainable fishing, rather than their short term greed. Short term greed is the road to disaster.
