This parking issue needs a little common sense
Saturday 3rd April 2010, 2:59PM BST.
From Michael Officer
I HAVE nothing against Tristan Dodd, the acting director for transport at TTS. No doubt he is rewarded commensurate with his high position.
I take exception to the system that employed an undoubtedly able individual. He either cannot see the difference between putting paycards on the dashboard of a locked car and a paycard on a motorbike – or he chooses to ignore common sense in favour of following the establishment line.
But I ask why? He is in no danger of losing his job or pension, whatever crass policies he underwrites.
I would not be so depressed if I had not seen similar issues evolve in exactly the same way from States Department to States Department. If we pay superbly for our civil service (and we do) should we not expect a little backbone and common sense?

Let it go with the complaining about having to pay to park your motorbike. Why shouldn’t you have to pay to park like the rest of us.

I’m hoping God’s Mentor is being a tad sarcastic here, but if not, try this, because we take up less space, cause no congestion and use hardly any fuel.
If the powers that be actively promoted motorcycle/moped travel, we could go a long way to solving our congestion and parking problems.
If there was no sarcasm meant, may I suggest you have the vision to become one of our esteemed MEMBERS should you stand at next election time. You obviously have the foresight and vision required.

Perhaps your visor needs cleaning, but last time I looked there are umpteen FREE parking areas, “actively promoting motorcycle/moped travel” in St Helier.
So why the hell should they be allowed to block up, free of charge, the very pay card areas that are financing these free spaces.
And as for how to display pay cards on a motor bike, look no further than the methods employed for insurance discs.
With your lack of observation and inventiveness perhaps you could become an “esteemed MEMBER”

Thanks for your comments PJG (Use your real name and be taken more seriously)
No argument, Yes there are free parking spaces for bikes, but clearly not enough as these bike parks are packed to the hilt by early morning. May I suggest by the more conscientious commuter.
Think about it, you can fit at least half a dozen bikes in the same space as a car, so the more two wheeled commuters the better. This should be encouraged don’t you think?
Of course you have every right to question my apparent lack of observation and inventiveness. However, you seem to have missed the point of my comment. The more people using two wheeled transport, be it motorised or not, the less congestion caused and the reduced need for parking benefits all.
I suppose I shouldn’t even mention the environmental benefits of two wheeled travel, as this appears to be a subject that you haven’t got to. Try daily Worldwide media, it will explain.

Thanks for your reply.
There are many reasons people do not use their real names on this site (“Use your real name and be taken more seriously”) this and your, why doesn’t everyone use my choice of transport theory only shows how ignorant and uncaring you are of the predicaments and choices of others.
I “do” use motor bikes, I also use cars and heavy goods vehicles, IMO there are enough free parking spaces to make using 2 wheels “attractive”, maybe not exactly where “you” find them convenient, it may mean walking a short distance but walking is good for you.”I suppose I shouldn’t even mention the environmental benefits”
NO Jon I have not missed your point.
“If the powers that be actively promoted motorcycle/moped travel, we could go a long way to solving our congestion and parking problems.”
Its my opinion they do.
There are many reasons why others do not use your chosen form of transport, fear of using a machine with a proven high injury / mortality rate is one of them. Are you suggesting only the fit young and fearless should have access to free parking ? These people use cars, and do not as do motor cyclists have free parking spaces, in fact its them that pay the cost of the free spaces.
You on the other hand appear to have missed my point, which “is” based on Michael Officer`s original thread.
If you really want to be able to park your bike more conveniently, and don’t care about blocking up a car sized place USE A PAYCARD and put it in an insurance disc holder.
