We run our own affairs, do we?

From John Heys
How gratifying to learn (JEP, 30 March) that the UK affirms our right to run our own affairs, and to self-government and that they think we are democratic, with free media and open debate.

Open debate of course does not include all the goings-on behind closed doors and what do they understand the meaning of democratic to be, certainly not Jersey’s interpretation.

As far as running our own affairs is concerned, it would not include the Airport, Harbours, Police, Prison, Health, bankers, finance advice, (recent engagement from the UK at £135,000 for a few months), passing our own laws, directory inquiries, electricity, and a Lieutenant-Governor.

How envious others must be to hear we are running our own affairs, when in fact foreigners are in most of the running positions with little knowledge of Jersey and the prospect of leaving before or after five years.

This ridiculous policy continues even after glaring costly failures. Why are we afraid to run our own island?
