‘Angry’ postal union vows to fight JCRA
Tuesday 6th April 2010, 2:59PM BST.
FURIOUS postal workers are planning to launch a campaign to stop Jersey’s competition watchdog from opening up the market.
The Communication Workers Union, which represents Jersey Post members, is ‘surprised, shocked and extremely angry’ at the announcement to increase competition in the Island.
Last week the Jersey Competition Regulatory Authority said that it was to end Jersey Post’s monopoly in the fulfilment industry by giving a licence to Hub Europe and Citipost to deliver large letters and packages – including DVDs and CDs – for online retailers.
But Jersey Post says this could lead to job losses, the closure of half the Island’s existing sub-post offices and force them to introduce every other day deliveries.
In a statement released to the media this morning, the CWU – which represents 400 Jersey Post employees – said: ‘As a union, we are not frightened of competition, but we are opposed to unnecessary competition and we see this announcement by the JCRA as the introduction of competition for the sake of it.’

The last thing we need is competition, Jersey is not a fair and democratic marketplace, it’s not our way. Look how competition is killing Jersey Telecoms, resulting in customers getting a better deal for less money, how can this be right.
I used to love Jersey because it was run like an ultra right wing fascist state, now look at it, I’m emigrating to Sooth Afrikay.

No-one cared when JT was sold out by the JCRA. People have lost their jobs the ones that were kept, some have been regraded, currently on going, and are now doing double day shifts to keep things going.
Although competition is good there should be more governing of it, where the staff are employed from, ie the island first before looking elsewhere. Due to poor management by the States and their departments Jersey is on a downward spiral. Its fine making decisions on reports from XYZ but if that report is not based on an island with the amount of people of Jersey then its just false statistics.

How can the Union be surprised and shocked since the postal law calling for competition has been in place since 2004 , and the Chairman has stated ” we accept the inevitability of regulation and competition and see it as a performance motivator ” ( Latest published Annual Report ).
If JP did want competition why introduce Argos catalogues to compete with local retailers , and why enter the crowded telecoms market.

I don’t get it Jersey Post have launched their own mobile phone service in competition with Jersey Telecom yet they feel they should not have any competition. And if they don’t get their way they will use their monopoly position to strike and damage local companies. I would say that shows why we need competition sooner rather than later.

They didn’t seem to mind when Telco competition was bought in.
MeMo anyone?

Maybe if they did a better job, people wouldn’t look elsewhere. So many parcels have been lost and they never seem to have a clue where they are!

“Jersey is not a fair and democratic marketplace, it’s not our way.”
Chilling words – but the absolute, unadulterated truth.
This island was, is, and always be regarded as the private fiefdom of an inner elite – unless the rank and file population want to do something to change this infamous ‘status quo’.
It’s up to us, ladies and gentlemen!

This is an article from JEP last year, Jersey Post want their cake and want to eat it and have everyone else’s cake!!!!
Jersey Post enters the phone market
By Harry McRandle
JERSEY Post is to compete in the mobile phone market from next month against the three existing suppliers.
The news comes in the same week that the competition in the phone market has been blamed for the loss of 80 jobs at Jersey Telecom.
Jersey Post will launch into the £13 million a year pay-as-you-go market under the brand MeMo, which will be owned by a new company named Postfone.
The launch of MeMo – which is part of the Jersey Post International Development arm headed by Gary Whipp – is unique as no new mobile masts are required by the firm.
The new company is known as a ‘mobile virtual network operator’ and will use the masts of an existing supplier

yes competition is all well and good on an even playing field.but all the 2 companies want is to cream off the lucrative fulfilment work .which gives jersey post the money to run a 6 day service and the sub post office network.IT WILL NOT lead to a cheaper and better service for the norma; regular customer.

The strange thing is prices will go up and the service will be less reliable.
Competition is not always king, and the market cannot regulate itself, or I did I learn the wrong lesson from the collapse of the entire system two years ago ( to remind you: the UK govt. – and other govts. around the world – bailed out our financial masters with our cash, after all our cash suddenly disappeared )
Amazingly, whenever I post something it always gets there, for a price I find agreeable. It’s why I like the idea of not trying to fix something that isn’t actually broken.

yes please give them a taste of their own medicine.
After effectively bringing in Argos in competition with local businesses and now MeMo to compete in the telecos market, its about time they saw the otherside of the effects of competition.

Even if Hub Europe and Citipost are given a green light to do business over here, they will still need to gain the business of the fulfilment industry. If Jersey post can give a better service and and/or better prices then they are more than likely to keep that business.
