Kitting out a school in Nairobi
Tuesday 6th April 2010, 3:00PM BST.
A GROUP of Islanders have just returned from a trip to Kenya where they have been kitting out a school for nearly 200 children.
The six volunteers from Jersey were joined by seven from Belfast, all of them part of the Nairobi Slum Schools Project.
Gill and Paul Bell, who set up the charity several years ago, led the group as they worked on the Red Roof Academy in Nairobi.
The other Islanders were Gill and Paul’s daughters Kerri-Ann (17), and Bethany (11) and Andrew Le Feuvre (40) and Evan Lafromboise (18).
‘The trip was fantastic,’ Gill said. ‘Being there has given us so much incentive to go back again as soon as we can to help.
The latest trip was to paint the classrooms, tile the floors and install electrical sockets and light fittings.
The school is right in the middle of the Nairobi slums and has seven primary schools, a head master, six teachers, a cook, an assistant cook, one nurse, a cleaner and three security guards.
On their last trip, Evan installed a computer and satellite broadband to allow the charity to have contact with the school via the internet phone service Skype.
A much-needed borehole is the new target for the trust, which Gill says is vitally important to the 182 children that use the school.
Funds are being raised at the Sunday morning charity sales in Kensington Place, which are held every week between 9 am and 1 pm.
Any donations of furniture can be dropped off at to the charity on Thursday between 4 and 6 pm.
